User Research is not about asking users what they want. It's about understanding why they behave the way they do. What do you think?

Completely agree. Users can tell you what they need, but rarely the root cause behind their behavior. Good research uncovers motivations, constraints, and context, not just opinions.

Whether or not Ford actually said it, the principle remains relevant: users are experts in their problems, not always in the solutions. People can describe their frustrations, goals, and workarounds. It's our responsibility as designers and researchers to uncover the underlying needs and translate them into meaningful solutions. That's why great user research focuses less on "What feature do you want?" and more on "Walk me through how you do this today." Behavior often reveals insights that opinions alone cannot.

I’d add that it's both. Listening to what users say is valuable, but pairing it with what they actually do is where meaningful UX insights emerge. The gap between the two is often where the best design opportunities lie.
